Canada breaks through!!!
Well folks, it appears that BBB’s criticism of the Canadian athletic squad was the PRIMARY motivation for them breaking through the medal barrier.
We now have 13…yes THIRTEEN medals. Not only that, we’ve gone for the PRESTIGIOUS events too. Things like trampoline, women’s wrestling, diving, and parallel parking. OK, maybe not the last one, but hey…we are on the move.
Just like pre-WWI?
Op-Ed Columnist - The Great Illusion
As I noted in an earlier post, this whole Georgia conflict is looking very alarming and may only be the tip of the iceburg. Could we be coming again to times like just before WWI?
I think there are some eerie parallels.
A new era begins for our family…
Today Jeffrey began homeschooling! He was pretty excited about it, and asked if he was doing it tomorrow. Boy, does he not know what’s in store for HIM.
The reason we started this early in August was so that he could take extra time off later in the year for different events. His schooling will start at 9:30AM Tuesday to Saturday.
The pretty teacher.
The teaching.
Why are we homeschooling?
Simple. We want Jeffrey and the others who come along later to have every opportunity to be shaped for serving God. We only have one time through to raise our children, and more than anything else…we want them to be His.
But wait!
This just in…see post below for context…
Canadian men’s eight advances
According this this site WE…yes WE the mighty Canadians…are, get this, highly touted and the elite eight…in…are you ready for this????
MEN’S EIGHT ROWING.
Yes. When it comes to putting 8 men single file in a rowboat…
We rule.
Along with the rest of you folks, I too will be glued to the screen (radio screen, of course), anxiously waiting for the news.
I can practically taste the gold.
And don’t even get me started about the excellent prospects we have in the underwater blindfolded synchronized bungee jumping 500 metre medley coming up tomorrow.
Going for Olympic humility
Well folks, the Beijing Olympics are well underway, and I see that the
mighty Canadian Olympic Squadron is pretty much steamrolling the
competition. So far we have pretty much excelled in every event
listed…by excelled of course I mean, winning no medals in anything.
Yeah anyway, this is because I’m talking here about ATTITUDE. We lead
the world in humility and accepting losses with grace. Here in Canada
we feel that winning begets pride, therefore we shun all such
endeavours.
The other cool thing to note is that as of this moment, I am tied with
the Canadian national team in medals won…and I’m not even there!
However, I am in serious contention for the bronze in the 30 minute
preaching freestyle.
I would also note here that besieged Georgia has won 1 more medal than us.

Sankeys were here
Our family enjoyed having the Sankey family here for missions service this morning at our church. They did a great job presenting how God is working in their lives and in the work of Mexico. Having repeatedly expressed prayer in church for Logan Sankey over the last number of months, and hearing ABOUT them, it was great to actually see them in person!

The next big thing???
And now, ladies and gentlemen, a brief foray into politics…
Back in the 2000 election who would have thought that Iraq, terrorism, and the high price of oil would be the biggest challenges a few years later?
It seems that the only thing we learn from history…as the saying goes…is that we don’t learn from history.
It very well could be that the next administration will have to deal with a major problem…a new Cold War.
This battle with Georgia is very disturbing, and in my mind deserves far more attention and concern from the US than it has been given.

It seems that politics focuses obsessively on the present and recent past, and often ignores the future. Someday the problems in Iraq, high price of oil, etc may pale in comparison to perhaps the most dangerous man in all the world…as I posted here back in 2006.
Oh, and my back is doing better….thanks for all your cheques and checks ![]()
Backing away from comfort…
Yes, folks this is what happens when your back starts acting up. Yesterday, (on our day off), I was walking to Staples across the parking lot with Janessa riding on my shoulders when suddenly my back decided it was time to quit working. I was thankful I didn’t drop her!
Anyway, I’m feeling some better now (after chiropractor visit #1), but YOW! What a peaceful night of sleep…not. In case any of you are wishing to send notes of sympathy, you can, just keep in mind that I prefer money, gift cards, and cheques even better. Like my mother always taught me, and I quote, “a card is only as valuable as the money tucked inside.”
Actually, my mother would probably kill me, if she read this post, but ![]()
My Complete Life Story
Joel and Jen Byer pastor the Dawn Valley Bible Methodist Church just north of Tupperville, Ontario. Frequently Joel enjoys writing about himself in the third person.
Anyway :-), Joel and Jen met at Penn View Bible Institute, and were married August 21, 1999. We have two great children, Jeffrey (6) and Janessa (3). As of the moment, we have no pets, although I’m hoping to persuade my wife to at least allow us a hamster.
I like: preaching, visiting people and telling them about Jesus, chess, hockey, stamp collecting, guitars, as well as blogging and all things digital. My wife likes: board games not named Scrabble or Boggle, walks along the country road, shopping, piano, and keeping me in line.
Well, I suppose there’s a few things left out of my “complete” life story, but then again you didn’t care anyway, did you?
